DJ Kellerman made 10 saves in goal to spark Ward Melville to a 9-5 win over Syosset Saturday in the Long Island Class A boys’ championship at Hofstra University.
The Patriots (17-3) advance to the New York semifinals Wednesday at Hofstra (8 p.m.) vs. Section 1 champion Lakeland Panas (19-2), a 13-7 winner over Valley Central.
Eddie Munoz tallied three goals for Ward Melville, which has won eight straight games and allowed just 16 goals in its last four outings.
“This was awesome,” said Kellerman. “We have a great defense and we have the best defensive coach on the island. This is great but we have two more steps and we want it. I’m very confident in this team.”
The Patriots’ defense dominated in the first half and Ward Melville led, 4-1, at the intermission. The Pats stretched the lead to 6-1 as Connor Grippe tallied two goals and two assists and Chris Grillo tallied one goal and two assists.
“The boys played great,” said Ward Melville head coach Jay Negus. “DJ Kellerman did a great job. I’m just thrilled with the progress I’ve seen on this journey. It has been a really cool thing to see. I’m excited.”
Macaire O’Keefe tallied four goals and Lucas Cotler tallied one goal and one assist for Syosset.
“You have to call a spade a spade,” said Syosset head coach John Calabria. “Ward Melville brought an unbelievable goalie, unbelievable defense and took us out of everything that we did. They were great. Everything they did was designed to take us out of what we do and they were successful.”
Negus said his team does not know a lot about Lakeland Panas.
“We like to break other teams down and implement strategies to break them down,” he said. “So we have to reach out and get back to the drawing board. It is a work day tomorrow. We still have two more stops on this journey. We can’t take any one lightly but when these guys come out and execute there is no stopping them.”
