Henry Grass tallied five goals and three assists to boost Bronxville to a 13-7 victory over Babylon Wednesday in the New York Class C semifinals at Hofstra University.
Section 1 champion Bronxville (17-6) will face undefeated Cazenovia Central (22-0), an 8-6 winner over Penn Yan on Saturday at Hofstra at 4 p.m. Cazenovia, the Section 3 champion, defeated Bronxville, 13-11, in last year’s title game.
“This is awesome,” said Grass. “We made it to the state finals last year and it feels good to be going back, but we have one more step to go.
“Coach (Tim Horgan) got us going at half time, telling us if we win face-offs and keep the ball on the offensive side we can win this game. Everyone was moving around and feeling it tonight. When we started to pull ahead in the second half we knew we just had to keep our foot on the petal and not let up.”
Bronxville led just 4-3 at halftime, but right off the second-half draw Owen Jones scooped the groundball and scored in transition to spark a 3-0 run. Grass scored his fourth goal with 20 seconds left in the third quarter, starting a 5-0 run that give the Broncos a comfortable 12-4 with 7:46 remaining.
Matt Behrens tallied three goals and two assists and Michael Crawford tallied two goals and two assists for Bronxville.
“This is a great group of guys and they have had their eye on this all year,” said Horgan. “I thought we settled down a little bit in the second half and we possessed the ball more offensively.
“The guys were a little eager to go to the cage, which has been the case all year. But once they settled down and worked within the system we scored a couple of goals. Babylon is a great team and they are well coached but they aren’t deep so we knew if we kept them on the field and slowed them down offensively it would work in our favor.
Ray Wardell tallied three goals and two assists and Nick Santorelli tallied two goals and one assist for Babylon.
“Bronxville played a great game,” said Babylon head coach John Greaney. “They deserved to win. Their coaching staff did a great job and their kids did a great job. We just didn’t have enough today to beat a team like Bronxville.”
Horgan is anxious to begin preparing for Cazenovia.
“We are going to have a good day of practice tomorrow,” he said. “We are looking forward to playing Cazenovia. We will found out a little bit about them, form a game plan and go from there.”
