Manhasset (17-1) – the No. 5 team in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits Rankings – advances to play Burnt Hills-Ballston (Section 2) in a state semifinal at 9:30 a.m. Friday at SUNY Cortland.

“We played so well together today,” said Ronbeck. “Sayville is such a great team. We played like sisters today. In the beginning we were a little shaky because it was close but then we calmed down and started to get some shots in.

“At halftime our coach (Danielle Gallagher) told us to play like we were losing, and I think that really helped us. Last year we lost the first game at Cortland and we wanted to win today so we can get back there and redeem ourselves.”

Manhasset led, 5-3, and then went on a 7-0 run to break the game open Julia Glynn tallied three goals and four assists, Erin Barry tallied three goals and Emily Koufakis tallied two goals for Manhasset.

“The girls played great today,” said Gallagher. “They came out and they were ready to play. In the second half we got into a little bit of a lull, but then we picked it back up.

“Something that helped us is that I think Sayville was little beat up after the first half because our kids came out on such fire. We feel good going forward. We’ve had some games where we didn’t play to the best of our ability and still came out winners but you can’t do that in the states.”

Olivia Russell tallied three goals and Julianne Johnston tallied two goals for Sayville (14-5), the Suffolk County champion.

“You have to give credit where credit is due,” said Sayville head coach Adam Sznitken. “That’s why they are one of the best teams in the country.

“I’m proud of my girls for winning the county title and showing fight. Manhasset won it; they deserved it so good luck to them.”
