Kerrigan Miller and Nicole Copping each scored four goals today to lead Bayport-Blue Point to a stunning 11-9 come-from-behind victory over previously undefeated Mt. Sinai in the Suffolk County Class C championship at Dowling College.

Mt. Sinai (18-1) is the defending state champion and is ranked No. 3 by Brine/TopLaxRecruits.com. It had a 38-game win streak snapped.

The Phantoms (14-3) claimed their first Suffolk title and advance to Sunday’s Long Island championship vs. Cold Spring Harbor at 2:30 p.m. at Dowling College.

Mt. Sinai had defeated Bayport Blue Point, 15-5, on April 9. It was the only time BBP had lost by more than one goal all season.

“After that game, we said to ourselves: ‘New slate.’ We changed our defense, offense – everything,” said Miller.

It showed.

Bayport-Blue Point head coach Jason Gick got two stars and a team effort. Goalkeeper Jill Rall made five saves, including several key blocks to ensure the win down the stretch; senior captains Cassie Stucklen and Cassie Dooley both scored to keep momentum on the Phantoms side.

And the BBP defense held top Division I commits Casey Mitchell, Shayna Pirreca, and Sydney Pirreca to just nine total points.

For the first 30 minutes of the game though, it looked like a repeat performance from the Mustangs. Mt. Sinai quickly got out to a 3-0 start. And after five minutes in the second half, the Mustangs lead was 7-3 thanks to a hat trick from Mitchell and two goals from Shayna Pirreca.

However, then Miller and Copping took over. Miller scored two goals to bring the deficit to 7-5 with 9:08 remaining. And then Copping finished off the Mustangs with four goals in the final eight minutes, including one to clinch the game with six seconds remaining.

“Those two are the heart and soul – they are blood and guts players,” said Gick. “They do the dirty work. They get the groundballs. They are two of our most important players.”

Copping, a junior will go on to play soccer at Manhattan College, and sophomore Miller will play lacrosse at USC. But one thing is for certain: they will have at least one more season, and game, to play together.
