Gerard Arceri won 20 of 21 face-offs and John Daniggelis scored four goals as Smithtown East defeated West Islip, 15-7, Wednesday at Stony Brook to win its first Suffolk County Class A title.
The Bulls (16-3) advance to play Massapequa Saturday (1 p.m.) in the Long Island Championship at Hofstra University.
“This win is a testament to 37 guys believing in each other,” said Smithtown East coach Jason Lambert. “We’re a team. Everybody helps out – we’re a team.”
Arceri added a goal and two assists. He had six different foes at the X.
“It’s all about practice. The more you practice, the better you are,” said Arceri. “It helps to be fast.”
Winning the faceoffs appeared to be an effortless task for the Bulls, but scoring was no different. The other weapons were Brian Willets (three goals, one assist), Dan Rooney (three goals, one assist), Tom Marino (two goals), Joe Saggese (one goals, two assists) and Connor Desimone (one goal).
“The secret is moving the ball,” said Willets. “We’ve got talented kids who love to share the rock. Nobody on this team is selfish.”
Lambert repeated those sentiments and expressed that the team effort was made possible by following his four principles from this season.
“We’ve been preaching four things all year long: winning faceoffs, pickup ground balls, value the ball on offense, and finish our shots,” said Lambert.
Trevor Bovich had two goals and Conor Smith four assists for West Islip (13-7).
