Brendan McDougal posted 15 saves and held Manhasset to one goal for the first three periods to spark Lynbrook to an 8-4 victory over the Indians in the Nassau County Class B championship game Tuesday at Hofstra University.
The Owls will play tonight’s Rocky Point-Miller Place winner on Saturday (Hofstra University, 3:30 p.m.) for the Long Island Championship.
“This is wonderful,” said McDougal. “Our defense was behind us the whole way and our offense put up a couple of goals that gave our defense a lot less pressure.
“I was in the zone the whole way, but our defense played phenomenal. This is surreal. I can’t believe it, it’s just awesome.”
After Manhasset scored first, Lynbrook went on a 6-0 run that went four minutes into the final period as McDougal and the Lynbrook defense of Eddie Bouhall, Zach Barrett and Quentin Herrmann held the Indians scoreless for 37 minutes. Michael Toy and Gordon Purdie each tallied two goals and one assist and Mike McVeigh tallied one goal and two assists for Lynbrook.
“I think this was an excellent effort,” said Lynbrook head coach William Leighley. “Manhasset is a class program and the royalty of lacrosse. Our guys stepped up to the plate and made some good plays.
“We had a good plan in place, we were able to execute it and obviously hold them down. They are a very talented team and for us to play that good on the defensive end says a lot about our kids.”
Jack Miller tallied two goals and John Young grabbed nine saves for Manhasset.
“They came to play,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “Offensively we just couldn’t get anything going. We had guys trying to do it by themselves and you got to play as a team.”
