For the first time, we are assembling our best high school players in each grade to compete head-to-head with the best Canadian high school players in the High School Challenge Cup. Teams will be announced on August 1st. Games will be played in mid-late September.
Canada will be challenging United States, along with a broad field of teams from around the world for bragging rights this summer at the International Games in Denver. There is now a second challenge over the border going on which is at the high school level. Team National Stars and Stripes will be challenging Team Maple Leafs.
Tryouts for the US Team National Stars and Stripes will be held in 3 locations on June 18 at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT, July 3rd in Nassau County, Long Island and July 15-27th in the Philly area, with a date and location to be announced.
Two teams will be formed in each of the following grades: 2015, 2016 and 2017. Team National Stars and Stripes will be coached by well-known members of the US lacrosse community and will be announced along with the team rosters on August 1st. The games will be held in mid-late September at a site somewhere between Pennsylvania and Canada.
The United States and Canada have been constantly fighting to determine the dominant country for high school lacrosse talent. Clearly the United States is larger and continues to grow the sport at a rapid rate but lacrosse is Canada’s national sport and, while hockey is very big in Canada, people underestimate just how much Canadians love lacrosse.
With the World Games coming and the tremendous success Canadians have had in many of our NCAA programs, Canada’s prominence in lacrosse cannot be ignored. While many Canadians focus heavily on box lacrosse, the Canadians are also growing the field game very rapidly and you see that growth on the college level.
While it was originally thought of as merely a fun idea, the Canadian group leading Team Maple Leafs is taking this challenge very seriously. The formation of Team National Stars and Stripes is also getting more serious and officials intend on building the best high school team to represent Team National Stars and Stripes in this high school challenge cup.
Tryouts for these teams are now underway and we are seeking the top players in the United States. Each team will have 24 players. Players selected for the teams will be notified on August 1st and shortly thereafter, there will be an announcement of the rosters of the complete team. While this is not a recruiting event, based on the players expected to try out, it is believed that many college coaches will be attending the tryouts.
