Ryan Kelly tallied three goals and Sayville bolted to a 6-0 halftime lead en route to a to a 9-6 victory over Shoreham- Wading River Saturday in a Suffolk County Class B first-round playoff game.
The win vaults the fourth-seeded Golden Flashes (12-5) into Tuesday’s semifinals at top-seeded Rocky Point at 4 p.m. Rocky Point (16-1) toppled Elwood, 13-9.
Shoreham-Wading River, the defending Long Island champions, finished at 9-8.
“I thought we fought hard today,” said Kelly. “We started off hot. They came back a little at the end, but our defense shut them down and played great today.
“I feel very confident with our chances going forward. In this division, anybody can play with anybody. It’s whoever wants it more.”
Spencer Andrews dominated at the faceoff X for Sayville winning 14 out of 18 draws. Sayville led by as much as 7-0 in the third period and later, 9-2, on a goal by Kelly heading into the fourth quarter. Matt Selts added two goals and one assist, Jack Coan tallied two goals and Andrews tallied one goal and two assists for Sayville.
“Shoreham is a very talented team,” said Sayville head coach Christian Doller. “I think our guys came out ready to win, they knew how to win and they executed perfectly.
“Holding Shoreham scoreless in the first half was a big testament to our defense. We had a dominant performance by our face-off guy, Spencer Andrews, and our offense was able to possess the ball and score goals instead of possessing and losing the ball.
“I feel confident going forward because our guys are playing their best lacrosse and that’s when you want them to do it – in the playoffs.”
Thomas Tatarian posted 15 saves, Anthony Visintin tallied two goals and one assist and Hunter Hayes tallied two goals for Shoreham Wading River.
