Gabbi Labuskes tallied four goals and one assist to boost visiting Northport to a 9-5 victory today over Smithtown West.
The win raised the Tigers to 5-1 overall while the Bulls fell to 4-2.
“We came out here to win,” said Labuskes. “We knew they beat Bay Shore and we lost to Bay Shore so we really wanted to win today. We practiced hard all week for this game and it feels good to know that all our hard work really paid off.”
Smithtown West took an early 3-1 lead at the 18:43 mark of the first half, but was blanked the rest of the half. Northport went on a 4-0 run to end the half.
Smithtown West drew within 5-4 early in the second half, but Northport answered with two goals in 20 seconds and the Bulls never recovered. Julia Sarcona tallied one goal and four assists, Heather Engellis tallied two goals and Kristen Brunoforte grabbed seven saves for Northport.
“I think the girls were able to maintain their composure and take care of the ball a lot better than we have done in the past,” said Northport head coach Carol Rainson-Rose. “Time of possession was definitely in our favor. We held onto the ball most of the second half and that was the point to keep it away from them.”
Mackenzie Heldberg tallied two goals and one assist, Loren Antonacci tallied one goal and two assist and Jess Meyers grabbed seven saves for Smithtown West.
The Bulls were coming off a huge 11-10 win Tuesday over Bay Shore and are a much-improved team from a year ago.
“I’m a little disappointed,” said Smithtown West head coach Carie Bodo. “Northport has always been our nemesis.
But this is the best we have ever played against them. They have always scored 20 goals or more against us so for us this is a victory for us.”
