NYIT head lacrosse coach Bill Dunn welcomes 17 fresh faces to the 2014 roster this season. The class began classes in September 2013 and helped the Bears defeat the alumni team 10-8 in the annual alumni game last Saturday.
“We are elated with our incoming class,” said Dunn. “There is a wealth of talent and we are pleased with the quality of these student-athletes, not only as lacrosse players but as outstanding students and individuals.”

Ian Brown Defense • Huntington, N.Y. (Long Island Lutheran HS)
Coach Dunn on Brown: “Ian has size, speed, and strength. He now has to work on his skills and then he will be in the mix.”
A two-sport athlete in football and lacrosse, Brown has his best lacrosse years ahead of him. At Long Island Lutheran, Brown was a two-time coach’s award recipient and was named the lacrosse team’s Most Valuable Player in 2013.
Mike Buscemi Midfield • Farmingville, N.Y. (St. Anthony’s HS)
Coach Dunn on Buscemi: “Mike will compete as one of the Bears’ face-off middies. He will develop his skills to stay on the field, too.”
Buscemi comes to NYIT from St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y. where he had an exceptional senior season as the Friars’ face-off middie. While at St. Anthony’s his helped his team to the 2012 Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) championship.
John Diaz Midfielder • Syosset, N.Y. (Syosset HS)
Coach Dunn on Diaz: “John is a hard-nosed, throwback middie. With his ability to face-off and stay on the field, he will become a dual threat for us.”
A three-sport athlete at Syosset High School in lacrosse, soccer, and wrestling, Diaz earned two all-county honors in lacrosse as was a high school honorable mention All-American. In wrestling, Diaz earned all-conference honors.
Nick Haiduk Attack • Holbrook, N.Y. (Sachem North HS)
Coach Dunn on Haiduk: “Nike is a hustler. He always works on the small things and down the road this will pay off.”
Haiduk joins the Bears’ lacrosse program after playing two varsity seasons at Sachem North High School. He has an outstanding work ethic and is constantly improving his game. With this attitude he will develop into one of the Bears’ top attack men. Haiduk’ s older brother Billy played for the lacrosse team from 2008-2011 and was a member of the 2008 National Championship team.
Brian Headrick Attack • Kings Park, N.Y. (Kings Park HS)
Coach Dunn on Headrick: “Brian will have the opportunity to play the right side and log some valuable minutes this year.”
Headrick is a right-handed attack man from Kings Park High School where he received 2013 Suffolk County All-Division honors. He sees the field well and has shown he can feed and shoot from behind the game. A two-sport athlete in lacrosse and track, Headrick was also a four-time league champion in track.
Peter Izzo Goal • Merrick, N.Y. (St. Dominic’s HS)
Coach Dunn on Izzo: “Pete has shown that he can play at this level, but will have to show that he can do it day in and day out.”
A two-sport athlete in lacrosse and soccer, Izzo comes to the Bears from St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay, N.Y., where he holds the school record for most saves in a game. Izzo has good size in the goal and is very athletic. He will compete for playing time immediately.
Will Kistinger Midfield • Bohemia, N.Y. (Connetquot HS)
Coach Dunn on Kistinger: “Will will be an impact player for the Bears with the ability to play good defense. He has very off speed and quickness. Will has the opportunity to break in the first two midfield lines.”
Kistinger is a throwback middie that has the ability to do it all from offense to defense and be a face-off specialist. A two-sport athlete in football and lacrosse from Connetquot High School, Kistinger earned first team all-division honors in 2013. For football he was also a first team all-division selection and participated in the Suffolk County All-Star football game.
Shane Lenahan Attack • Plainview, N.Y. (Plainview JFK HS)
Coach Dunn on Lenahan: “Shane has physical tools and will use them to compete on the crease.”
Lenahan is a two-sport athlete in lacrosse and football from Plainview JFK High School. He is a good inside shooter who will work the crease for the Bears.
Mike Lucarelli Midfielder • Dix Hills, N.Y. (Half Hallow Hills West HS)
Coach Dunn on Lucarelli: “Mike possesses size, speed, and a good shot. He will make an immediate impact at the midfield.”
Lucarelli played varsity lacrosse for three seasons at Half Hallow Hills West.
Joe Morhardt Defense • Lindenhurst, N.Y. (Lindenhurst HS)
Coach Dunn on Morhardt: “Joe will be in the rotation for the Bears. A bright and aggressive player, he uses his speed, strength, and quickness to stop the opponent on the back line.”
Morhardt brings a football mentality to the lacrosse field. A strong, fast defenseman, he has shown the ability to play physical within the framework of the defense. At two-sport athlete in football and lacrosse, he has received all-division honors in both sports and was named the lacrosse team’s defensive MVP. He captained both teams and earned the “Spirit of Lindenhurst” award.
Danny Patterson Defense • Farmingdale, N.Y. (Farmingdale HS)
Coach Dunn on Patterson: “Danny will start out working with the EMD team. He understands the game with a good lacrosse IQ. Now he has to work on his conditioning and stick skills.”
A three-sport athlete in lacrosse, football, and wrestling at Farmingdale High School, Patterson has shown a good work ethic and will do what is needed to get on the field.
Mike Renick Midfielder • Lindenhurst, N.Y. (Lindenhurst HS)
Coach Dunn on Renick: “Mike is a hard worker and is constantly trying to improve his game. He has a champion attitude.”
Renick has a good lacrosse IQ and is very athletic. He understands offensive and defensive schemes and should compete for playing time. Renick’ s work ethic comes from being a five-sport athlete at Lindenhurst High School in golf, track, swimming, lacrosse, and football.
George Schultz Attack • Smithtown, N.Y. (Smithtown West HS)
Coach Dunn on Schultz: “George has good hands inside but can handle the ball on the perimeter, too. He will have an opportunity on the attack and at the midfield.”
Schultz played for a high powered team at Smithtown West High School. His big game experience will help him settle in to an attack/midfield role with NYIT. Schultz was a two-sport athlete in basketball and lacrosse, earning all-division honors in 2013. He was also the recipient of the school’s Kenneth Watson Award.
Alex Seltzer Goal • Plainview, N.Y. (Plainview JFK HS)
Coach Dunn on Seltzer: “Alex will compete for a starting spot in the goal. He has good body positioning and uses his size to his advantage.”
Seltzer is a good stopper and shows poise in the cage. He was a two-sport athlete in football and lacrosse at Plainview JFK High School and earned all-county honors in 2013.
Godwin Sotome Goal • Uniondale, N.Y. (Uniondale HS)
Coach Dunn on Sotome: “Godwin has been a pleasant surprise. He is a very hard worker and is always working to improve. He will compete for time this season.”
Sotome was a two-sport athlete at Uniondale High School in volleyball and lacrosse. He was named the lacrosse team’s MVP and was a high honor roll recipient. Sotome has good natural abilities and is fearless.
Nick Swanson Defense • Oceanside, N.Y. (Oceanside HS)
Coach Dunn on Swanson: “We are happy with Nick’s progress to date. His ability to move well both laterally and vertically will put him on the field for the Bears.”
Swanson played three years of varsity lacrosse at Oceanside High School. He was named team captain and earned all-conference honors in 2013. Swanson has good size and speed. With quick hands, he will compete for playing time either behind the goal or as a LSM.
Mike Zerbo Defense • East Setauket, N.Y. (Ward Melville HS)
Coach Dunn on Zerbo: “Mike will step in and make an impact on the Bears’ defense with exceptional lacrosse knowledge and a champion mentality.”
Zerbo was an anchor for the New York State Champion Ward Melville team. In 2013 he earned all-county honors in both lacrosse and soccer. He was also a 2012 all-league honoree in soccer.
