Kristen Brigagliano scored her first of four goals with 15:31 remaining in the game to spark an 8-0 run as host Bay Shore rallied to defeat Smithtown East, 11-9, Saturday in girls’ lacrosse action.
“I never lose hope,” said Bay Shore head coach Allison Pfeffer, whose team improved to 3-0. “I know the talent that I have and what they are capable of. They needed to step up and they did.
Smithtown East (2-1) dominated play at the start and quickly built a 2-0 lead on two goals by Annie Collins. The Bulls led 6-3 at halftime and added three more goals by the 22:03 mark of the first half.
But the Marauders finally began to solve Smithtown East goalie Ashley Stoessel (10 saves), who had thwarted them all day.
In the second half Bay Shore won 11 of 12 draws. Kyra Harney (two goals, four assists) assisted on a goal by Brigagliano that began the comeback and they connected again as Brigagliano scored with 7:39 left, giving Bay Shore a 10-9 lead.
“We came out a little slow in the beginning,” said junior attack Brigagliano, “Somehow we woke up, we realized this was our game so we gained the momentum and were able to come back.”
Cynthia DelCore and Carly Cox each added two goals and one assist for Bay Shore.
“It was really frustrating being down by so much,” said junior midfielder Harney. “Our drawer (center) Katie Kirk, was awesome. She came up so big for us. This team works hard every single day so we knew we could do it and we were able to make it happen.”
Elizabeth Pellechi and Shannon Kavanagh both scored three goals for Smithtown East.
“I think our team for the first time really played as a team,” said Smithtown East head coach Denise Daly. “We were pre-ranked as the 14 seeded team and we were beating the first place team for a majority of the game and I think what did it for us in the end was turnovers.”
