After leading the No. 13/11 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team to victories over Fresno State and Albany last week, senior midfielder Demmianne Cook and junior goalie Frankie Caridi have been named America East Offensive Player of the Week and America East Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Cook, who hails from Nesconset, N.Y., totaled 12 points last week on 10 goals and two assists. Her seven-goal outburst against Fresno State was her third of the season and second in seven days, as she previously tallied seven against Iona March 20 and Bucknell Feb. 16. Arguably, Cook’s two biggest points came Saturday against Albany on back-to-back assists to teammate Claire Petersen that extended the Seawolves’ lead to six, 8-2, in the second half. She scored her third goal of the contest in the final minutes to ice the 9-2 win over the rival Great Danes. A versatile midfielder, Cook recorded eight draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers in the two wins.
With 57 goals this season, Cook is just nine goals shy of matching her own school record of 68, which she set last year. Despite being in just her second full season in Seawolves Country after transferring from Adelphi last year, the captain sits at third all-time at SBU in career goals with 125. Cook has also moved into seventh on Stony Brook’s career points ledger with 137.
Caridi let in just three goals in two games last week for a goals against average of 1.69 as the Seawolves held their opponents to single-digits in scoring for the 10th and 11th times this season. The nation’s leader in goals against average and save percentage notched a save percentage of .727 and picked up four ground balls last week.
In a 20-2 win over Fresno State, she stopped two of the three shots she faced before being relieved midway through the second half. Against Albany, Caridi made six stops and intercepted an errant Great Danes pass that helped SBU begin an offensive possession that culminated in a goal and 5-2 lead early in the second frame. She helped Stony Brook match a single-game record for fewest goals allowed in both games, as Fresno State and Albany each managed just two goals against the stifling Seawolves’ defense Caridi anchors.
Stony Brook has picked up a weekly award in five of seven weeks this season and leads the conference with seven total awards. This marks the second consecutive weekly accolade for Cook and third honor of the season for Caridi.
The Seawolves, ranked at an all-time high No. 11 in the deBeer Media Poll, travel to Baltimore for a conference showdown with UMBC Saturday, April 6 at 5 p.m.
