Senior Adrian Sorichetti tallied two goals and two assists and junior Torin Varn recorded his fourth hat-trick of the season to lead the 15th-ranked Hofstra Pride to an 11-9 victory over the Big Green of Dartmouth at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
The Pride victory snapped a two-game losing skid as Hofstra improved to 6-3 on the year. Dartmouth dropped its third consecutive game and is now 2-5.
In addition to Sorichetti, who notched his second four-point game of his season, and Varn, Hofstra received two goals from freshman Sam Llinares, a goal and an assist from junior Drew Coholan, and two assists from senior Ryan O’Leary, who made his first start for the Pride on the attack line. Sophomore goalie Chris Selva continued his fine play in the Pride cage, making double-digit saves for the fourth consecutive contest with 14 against the Big Green.
Dartmouth was led by senior Chris Costabile with two goals and two assists, classmate Nikki Dysenchuk with two goals and one assist, and sophomore Jake Weil with three goals. Senior goalie Bernie Susskind made seven saves in the Dartmouth cage.
In a high-scoring first quarter, the Pride scored the first goal right off the opening face-off as sophomore pole Ryan Rielly scooped up the loose ball and beat Susskind for his second goal of the year just eight seconds into the game. Weil tied the game for Dartmouth with his fourth of the year at the 11:08 mark.
The Pride took a 3-1 lead on Varn’s 21st of the year, from O’Leary at the 5:46 mark, and a man-up goal by sophomore Tyler Begley, from Coholan, 31 seconds later. Costabile brought the Big Green back to within one with a dodge in the middle of the box for his 12th of the year just eight seconds after Begley’s tally. But Llinares and Coholan sandwiched a man-up goal by Costabile in the final 2:34 as the Pride took a 5-3 lead after one quarter.
The Big Green closed to within one again at 5-4 just 5:36 into the second quarter as Adam Fishman scored on the man-up from Costabile. But Hofstra started a 5-0 run with extra-man goals by Varn and Llinares, both assisted by Sorichetti, to take a 7-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Pride added three more goals in the first 6:26 of the third quarter. Sorichetti notched his ninth of the year off a short pass from sophomore Mike Malave 56 seconds into the period. Malave then posted his eighth of the season, from O’Leary, four minutes later, and Varn notched his third of the game with 8:34 to play in the third for a 10-4 lead.
But the Big Green was not through and would mount their own four-goal run to close to within two at 10-8 early in the fourth quarter. Dysenchuk scored on the run with 3:48 to go in the third before Cam Lee scored on the man-up, from Adam Hull, 56 seconds later.
Weil then scored back-to-back goals, the last one just 2:52 into the fourth quarter. But while Dartmouth was peppering Selva with 13-fourth quarter shots, Selva made five of his 14 saves in the final period to hold onto the lead.
Sorichetti added an insurance goal for the Pride with 2:36 to play for his 10th of the year before Dysenchuk closed out the scoring for Dartmouth with 25 seconds remaining. Hofstra was outshot, 445-26 including 27-10 in the second half. The Big Green also picked up 35 ground balls to the Pride’s 26.
Hofstra returns to Colonial Athletic Association play this Saturday, March 30 when they travel to Maryland to face the Towson Tigers at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
