Hofstra freshman attack Sam Llinares has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Lacrosse co-Rookie of the Week for the period ending Sunday, February 17, the conference announced Monday.

Linares, a native of Hauppauge, New York, tallied four goals and one assist in his collegiate debut in the Pride’s 14-9 victory over Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon. The former Under Armour and US Lacrosse All-American out of Hauppauge High School, opened the Hofstra scoring for the season with a goal just 3:35 into the contest. He assisted on the Pride’s second goal by Torin Varn and added two more goals in the second quarter as Hofstra built a 10-3 lead. Llinares notched his fourth and final goal late in the third quarter.

Llinares’ four goals are the most by a Hofstra freshman since Jay Card tallied five goals as a freshman in 2008.

The Hofstra newcomer shares the CAA Rookie of the Week award with Massachusetts goalie Zachary Oliveri. The Ronkonkoma, New York native recorded 18 saves as UMass posted a 12-11 come-from-behind victory over No. 4 North Carolina. His 18 saves are the most by a Minuteman goalie since 2010.

The CAA also announced that Penn State junior attack Shane Sturgis was named the CAA Player of the Week after scoring four goals in the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions’ 15-12 win over ninth-ranked Denver.
