From Press Release
USMMA Director of Athletics Sue Petersen Lubow has announced that Kyle Simensky will be the first head women’s lacrosse coach at the Merchant Marine Academy as the team begins play this season. Simensky previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Mariners’ men’s team in 2009-10 and was part of the 2009 squad that captured a Landmark Conference Championship. Most recently, he has served as an assistant coach and physical education teacher in the Locust Valley school district.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to start the women’s lacrosse program here at Kings Point,” said Simensky. “The Academy has a great tradition of excellent athletics and I look forward to adding another successful program to that tradition.”
Simensky is also a decorated NCAA Division III athlete, competing for the men’s lacrosse team at Cortland State. His team made three consecutive appearances in the national championship game from 2006-2008 and won a DIII National Championship in 2006. Simensky was named a SUNYAC All-Conference performer in his senior season. He finished his playing career with 193 total points, tied for 11th in Cortland State history, including 104 career goals.
“We are excited to be starting women’s lacrosse and that Kyle will be our coach,” commented Lubow. “His experience and energy along with his familiarity with the academy and the life of our Midshipmen make him a perfect fit. We feel he is an outstanding coach and will be successful leading our women into their first season.”
Simensky will immediately begin forming a schedule and rounding out a roster for the 2013 season. The Mariners will compete as an independent in 2013 before taking on a full Landmark Conference schedule in 2014.
