From Press Release

The eyes of the college lacrosse world will be on Ridley High School in Folsom, Pennsylvania this weekend for the fall-ball ending sixth annual Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Classic.

The Hofstra Men’s Lacrosse team will play twice on Saturday, October 6 when they face the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh at noon and the Wildcats of Villanova at 5 p.m. The Hofstra-Villanova game will be one of two college games streamed live at http://www.livestream.com/accesslacrosse.

The two-day Nick Colleluori Classic features 11 Division I teams playing on Saturday, October 6 starting at 9 a.m. while 11 Division II and III teams – including Dowling and Adelphi – will compete on Sunday, October 7. Twenty-four collegiate men’s lacrosse programs, 10,000 supporters and a large group of volunteers will descend upon Nick’s scholastic home field, Ridley High School, to be a part of this charity event, hosted by and benefiting the HEADstrong Foundation.

In addition to Hofstra, this year’s Division I line-up includes Colgate University, High Point University, Lehigh University, Marist College, Marquette University, University of Michigan, Mount St. Mary’s University, Robert Morris University, St. Joseph’s University and Villanova University. The Division II & III line-up includes Adelphi University, Albright College, Arcadia University, Chestnut Hill College, Dowling College, Marymount University, Misericordia University, Randolph-Macon College, Rosemont College, Richard Stockton College and Widener University

The 2013 Hofstra roster includes 28 returnees and eight starters from their 2012 team. Tierney will be interested in seeing his veterans perform with 15 talented newcomers in game situations against Lehigh and Villanova. But the main focus is on the HEADstrong Foundation and remembering Nick Colleluori.

The NCC is dedicated to remembering the life and legacy of HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori while promoting the importance of community, brotherhood and sportsmanship within the game. Hofstra Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney recently announced that senior midfielder John Antoniades has been named the Nick Colleluori Award winner and will wear Nick’s number (27) this year.

Nicholas Colleluori, who was a three-sport athlete and graduated from Ridley High School in June 2004, joined the Hofstra Pride Lacrosse team the next fall. With hard work and determination, Nick earned a role on the Hofstra team the spring of his freshman year. Nick was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in September, which started a courageous 14-month battle with cancer. Nick lost his battle to cancer on November 28th, 2006.

During his illness, Nick not only battled cancer physically, but also mentally. Nick reached out to others with the same illness and counseled them to have the same positive outlook that Nick always possessed. It was Nick’s hope and dream in his waning days and weeks to begin the HEADstrong Foundation, to help those who have been diagnosed with blood cancers, as well as put an end to this horrible disease.

Since 2007, the HEADstrong Foundation, to honor Nicholas “Head” Colleluori, and those affected by blood cancer, hosts The Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Classic, which has become the premier men’s collegiate fall-ball lacrosse tournament. With help from college lacrosse teams and the lacrosse community, the HEADstrong Foundation continues to build a “Team of Champions” to combat blood cancer. Each participating team sells HEADstrong T-shirts on their campus, to raise funds & awareness of this disease.

In just five years, The Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Classic has raised more than $1,000,000 for blood cancer research and family assistance, as The HEADstrong Foundation continues their mission to eliminate blood cancers. To drive home the HEADstrong Mission, and to allow each team to experience the importance of their hard work, each team will be assigned a HEADstrong Honorary Captain, someone currently dealing with blood cancer. The Honorary Captains will be part of the team for the day, and will serve to inspire them, with their relentless courage.
