The lacrosse world is mourning the death of Great Neck North boys’ lacrosse coach Chris Deeks, 60, who passed away suddenly Thursday night. LaxPower has reported he apparently died of a heart attack.
Deeks was the coach for Long Island for the Brine National Lacrosse Classic and for the LI team at the inaugural Empire State Cup this summer.
Deeks was a longtime coach for Ling Island in the Empire Games, and twice led the team to the gold medal at (in 1995 and 2008). He also coached the Empire Cup Long Island team this summer.
A graduate of Sewanhaka in 1970, Deeks began his teaching career (history) at Bethpage while also coaching football and lacrosse. He was lacrosse coach at Floral park From 1992 to 2007, and in 2010 Deeks moved on to coach lacrosse and football at Great Neck North. He was also a history teacher at the Highland School in Fresh Meadows and at Bethpage.
Deeks was also was a defensive coordinator for Hofstra University, his alma mater. He also coached at St. John’s University and was head coach at Globe Institute of Technology.
A Wake will be held Monday from 2-4:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 pm at New Hyde Park Funeral Home, 506 Lakeville Rd, New Hyde Park (516) 352-8989.
He is survived by his wife, Joann, their two children, his mother and a brother.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 10 am at New Hyde Park Funeral Home, 506 Lakeville Rd, New Hyde Park.
Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.
