Eight Hofstra alumni and former lacrosse players are on the active rosters of the four Major League Lacrosse teams who will be vying for the Steinfeld Trophy during the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior, Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26 at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Five Pride alums will be on the roster of the Long Island Lizards, the fourth seed in the MLL playoffs, when they meet the number one seed Denver Outlaws in the first semifinal at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Midfielder Brian Langtry, ’98, a 1998 USILA All-American honorable mention and America East Most Valuable player, is second on the Lizards in scoring with 23 goals and 12 assists for 35 points in 14 games this season. He has also picked up 15 ground balls.
Midfielder Michael Unterstein, ’08, a two-time All-CAA second team selection and the 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year, has played in 13 games for the Lizards and posted two goals and 16 ground balls.
Midfielder Kevin Unterstein, ’08, a 2007 USILA All-American honorable mention, two-time All-CAA selection, 2008 CAA Defensive Player of the Year and CAA Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player, has played in 12 games for Long Island. He is second on the Lizards with 40 ground balls.
Defenseman Mike Skudin, ’11, a 2011 USILA All-American honorable mention, two-time All-CAA selection, 2011 CAA Defensive Player of the Year and All-CAA Championship Tournament pick, has played in 11 games for the Lizards. He has tallied two assists for the Lizards.
Midfielder Doug Shanahan, ’02, the first Tewaaraton Trophy winner and a three-time USILA All-American selection including first team pick in 2001 and second team in 2000, has played in four games, including the last two, for the Lizards this season. The former four-time All-CAA selection has recorded one goal and one assist for Long Island this season.
Three Hofstra alums will be on the active roster of the second-seed Chesapeake Bayhawks, when they take on the third-seed Boston Cannons in the second semifinal at 4 p.m. The two winners of the semifinals will square off for the MLL title at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Chesapeake’s Hofstra group is led by defenseman Brian Spallina, ’00, a two-time USILA All-American selection, including first team pick in 2000, has played in 12 games for the Bayhawks. He has picked up eight ground balls on the season.
Defenseman Nicky Polanco, ’02, a two-time USILA All-American including a first team selection in 2002 and two-time All-CAA pick including both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year as a senior, has played in 11 games for Chesapeake this year. He has picked up 29 ground balls.
Midfielder John Orsen, ’06, a 2006 USILA All-America honorable mention and All-CAA first team selection, has played in nine games for the Bayhawks in 2012. He has tallied one goal, one assist and nine ground balls for Chesapeake.
Hofstra’s eight representatives in MLL Championship Weekend ranks third as the college with the most alums on the active roster. Both Virginia and Maryland each have nine alums on the active rosters of the four teams.
