New York City defeats Hudson Valley, 10-8, to claim inaugural Empire State Cup championship

New York City dominated after the half and topped previously undefeated Hudson Valley, 10-8, to win the 2012 Empire State Cup lacrosse event today at Central Square Stadium in Syracuse.

The game was tied 3-3 in the first half, but New York City pulled away with four straight goals and never looked back. Ward Melville’s Michael Rastivo, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, led all scorers in the gold medal game with three goals and one assist.

In the bronze medal game, Connor Fields’ overtime game-winner lifted Western past Long Island, 7-6. Western led 5-0 early in the game, before Long Island mounted a furious comeback that fell just short. Western’s John Januszkiewicz led the tournament in goals, assists and points.

In the fifth place game, Gale Thorpe set tournament scoring records with a six goal, five assist performance, to lead Central to a 14-6 win over Adirondack.

New York City 10, Hudson Valley 8

In the gold medal game, NYC was able to take down previously undefeated Hudson Valley, 10-8, to win the 2012 Empire State Cup. The game was tied 3-3 in the first half, but New York City pulled away with four straight goals and never relinquished the lead. Hudson Valley was able to rally three straight goals to cut the score to 8-6, and later 9-8, but a New York City goal in the final minutes cemented the win. Michael Rastivo (three goals, one assist) and Dylan Molloy (three goals) led New York City in scoring, while James Coughlan (one goal, two assists), Gregory Pietroforte (one goal), John Uppgren (one goal) and Colin Woolford (one goal) chipped in on offense. Dylan Moser (five saves) and Daniel Katzman (four saves) split time in between the pipes. John Yozzo-Scaperrotta (three goals) and Alex Corpolongo (two goals, one assist) led Hudson Valley in scoring. Kevin McDermott, Brian Prestreau and Christopher Santangelo added singles; Brian Prunty had one helper. Michael Zingaro (four saves) and James Danaher (two saves) saw time in goal for Hudson Valley. Daniel Manning and Luke Palmadesso combined to win 12 of 15 faceoffs.

Western 7, Long Island 6

Connor Fields scored the game-winning goal in overtime, lifting Western past Long Island, 7-6, to secure the Bronze Medal at the 2012 Empire State Cup. Western led 5-0 before LI scored four straight goals to cut the lead to 5-4. John Januszkiewicz buried a goal to stop the bleeding, but Long Island erased the two goal deficit late in the fourth quarter, with Christian Trasolini tying the game on a transition goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation. However, Fields’ heroics ensured Long Island could not complete the furious comeback. Austin Goltz (three goals, one assist) led Western in scoring, while Januszkiewicz (one goal, two assists), Connor Fields (one goal), James May (one goal), Tomothy Wagner (one goal), Austin Bishop (one assist) and Daniel LaCrosse (one assist) rounded out the Western scoring. Taylor Ferrino (eight saves) and Kyle Lake (three saves) each saw time in goal. Eric Gennari (one goal, two assists) and Matthew Heldberg (two goals) led Long Island in scoring, while Patrick O’Brien, Christian Trasolini and Mario Vezza each chipped in singles. Anthony Delosreyes (seven saves) and David Hwang (one save) both saw time in Long Island’s goal.
