Empire State Cup: New York City, Hudson Valley to meet for championship Sunday

Hudson Valley (6-0) and New York City (5-1) will meet in the Gold Medal Game today at 12:30 PM, after winning their semifinal games Saturday at Central Square Stadium outside of Syracuse.

In the first semifinal, Christopher Santangelo scored three goals to lead Hudson Valley past Long Island, 10-4.

Meanwhile, Dylan Molloy (three goals, one assist), Michael Rastivo (two goals, one assist) and Colin Woolford (two goals, one assist) led New York City past Western, 10-4.

The two teams met in round-robin play on Friday, with Hudson Valley squeaking away with a 6-5 win.

Western (3-4) and Long Island (3-4) will meet in the Bronze Medal Game at 11:00 AM; Western won the previous meeting, 10-6, on Friday.

Central (2-4) meets Adirondack (0-6) in the Fifth Place Game at 9:30 AM; Central won the round-robin game, 12-3, on Thursday.

Long Island 9, Central 6

Long Island defeated Central for the second time in as many days to advance to the semifinals of the Empire State Cup. With a 4-2 lead at halftime, Long Island scored five of the next six goals to take command of the game. Central started to mount a comeback but ultimately ran out of time, scoring the last three goals of the game. Patrick O’Brien led Long Island with three goals and two assists, while Nicholas Santorelli (two goals), Matthew Heldberg (one goal, one assist) and Anthony Ramaizel (one goal, one assist) also had multiple-point games. Maxwell Chin and Christian Trasolini recorded singles, while Evan Dorman and Mario Vezza chipped in an assist each. David Hwang made five saves in the win. Connor O’Hara led Central with two goals and one assist, with Ronnie Bertrand (two goals), Kendall Vecchio (one goal), Ryan Wright (one goal), Matthew Moran (one assist) and Gale Thorpe (one assist) rounding out the scoring. Maximillian Smith recorded four saves in the loss.

Hudson Valley 10, Long Island 4

Christopher Santangelo scored three goals to lead Hudson Valley past Long Island, 10-4. The win secures HV’s place in the Gold Medal Game. The score was tied 2-2 in the first quarter, before Hudson Valley began to pull away. Kevin McDermott and Brian Prestreau scored two goals and one assist each, while Alex Corpolongo and Brian Prunty chipped in one goal and one assist. Zach Mermelstein (one goal) and Luke Palmadesso (one assist) rounded out the scoring. Michael Zingaro (seven saves) and James Danaher (two saves) split time in the winning goal. Matthew Heldberg (one goal, one assist), Patrick O’Brien (one goal, one assist), Christian Trasolini (one goal, one assist) and Nicholas Santorelli (one goal) were responsible for Long Island’s scoring. Brian Hughes (two saves), Anthony Delosreyes (two saves) and David Hwang (one save) all saw time in the LI cage.

New York City 10, Western 4

NYC punched its ticket in the Gold Medal Game, racing past Western, 10-4, in the semifinals. Western led 7-0 at halftime before surrendering a goal in the third quarter. Dylan Molloy (three goals, one assist), Michael Rastivo (two goals, one assist) and Colin Woolford (two goals, one assist) led New York City in scoring, while James Coughlan, Jake Margolis and John Uppgren added singles. Dylan Moser (four saves) and Daniel Katzman (three saves) split time in goal. Austin Bishop, Austin Goltz, John Januszkiewicz and Tomothy Wagner were responsible for Western’s scoring. Kyle Lake (five saves) and Taylor Ferrino (two saves) saw time in the Western goal.
