Four Long Island women among incoming recruits for Marist College

The Marist Women’s Lacrosse program under the leadership of third-year Head Coach Jessica O’Brien announced on Tuesday the incoming freshmen class for the women’s lacrosse team that will take the field for the first time collegiately in the spring of 2013. The class of six student-athletes come for the Northeast, as four are from New York and one from each of Connecticut and Massachusetts. The Red Foxes are proud to welcome: Kaitlyn Brown, Kacey Carter, Allison Gionta, Kara McHugh, Anna Petrunich and Brittany Tricarico.

“We are very excited to welcome the newest members to our Marist lacrosse family. All six athletes come from excellent high school programs and will contribute both academically and athletically to the Marist community. I expect this class to have an immediate impact on the program and we are fortunate to have a group of returning players who will help in their transition. We look forward to the many contributions they will make over the next four years.”

Kaitlyn Brown, Midfield, Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schrieber

A four-year varsity lacrosse athlete, Brown has consistently grown as a player. Following her receiving the Coach’s Award after her sophomore season, she was named to the All-Conference Varsity Lacrosse team as a junior and to the All-County team as a senior. During 2012 spring season, she served as her team’s captain. Brown also played varsity soccer and junior-varsity basketball during her high school career. Following her senior soccer season, she earned the Coach’s Award. Brown also excelled in the classroom, where she was named as a Student of the Month, a Scholar Athlete and to the Principal’s Honor Roll.

Kacey Carter, Midfield, Lynbrook, N.Y./ Lynbrook

Carter joins Marist following a five-year career on Lynbrook High School’s varsity lacrosse team, including starting at midfield/attack since her freshman year. She was named a Scholar Athlete for four years and named All-Conference after her junior and senior seasons. She also was a part of her school’s conference championship team during her junior season. A four-year member of the Turf Island Travel Lacrosse Club, Carter was the captain and MVP for two seasons. She also was a team captain of her varsity cross country and winter track teams. Off the field, Carter, her class’ Vice President was a member of the National Honor Society throughout high school and the Tri-M Music Honor Society for the past four.

Allison Gionta, Attack, Eastport, N.Y./Eastport South Manor

Gionta comes to Marist as a three-sport athlete from Eastport South Manor High School. A captain for her senior season, she earned All-County honors three times in her career; following her sophomore, junior and senior years. In 2012, her Eastport South Manor squad captured its first-ever Suffolk County Class B championship. Gionta also participated in basketball for four years and volleyball for three. A four-year honor roll student, she was recognized on the Principal’s Honor Roll during her senior year. As a culmination of her high school career, she was awarded the MSG Varsity Scholarship.

Kara McHugh, Attack, Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand

An accomplished athlete during her time at Daniel Hand High School, McHugh was named to First Team All-State, First Team All-SCC and First Team All-Area as both a junior and senior. She was also recognized to the Super Junior Team in 2011. Outside of lacrosse, McHugh earned honors on the All-SCC women’s soccer team and was named her team’s MVP as a senior at Daniel Hand. A four-year letter-winner in basketball, as well, she served as a captain during her senior season of all three of her respective teams.

Anna Petrunich, Midfield, Westborough, Mass./Westborough

Petrunich will join the Red Foxes after a decorated high school playing career at Westborough High School. A four-year starter on the varsity team, she has played an important role in her school being named Central Mass Division 1 District Champions her first three seasons. Following her junior season in 2011, Petrunich was named an U.S. Lacrosse All-American Honorable Mention and U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American. She also was named to ESPNBoston’s MIAA All-State Lacrosse Team and the “Telegram and Gazette” Super Team the same season. She also found success in field hockey and track at Westborough. A four-year player and three-year starter on the field hockey field, Petrunich was named as a Mid-Wach B League All-Star following her senior season, this past fall. In track, she was also named and Mid-Wach B League All-Star. A strong student, as well, she has been a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society for the last two academic years.

Brittany Tricarico, Defense, Port Jefferson, N.Y./Brookhaven-Comsewogue

Tricarico has been a member of Brookhaven-Comsewogue High School’s varisty lacrosse team’s starting lineup all four years. A captain her senior year; she earned accolades for her play on the All-Division team in 2012. She was named to the Academic All-American team two times following her junior and senior seasons. As a member of the Long Island Yellow Jackets club team, she was recognized as the team’s MVP in 2010, as well as the MVP of the 2010 Galaxy Nationals. A multi-sport athlete, Tricarico also participated on her varsity field hockey, track and cheerleading teams. A well-rounded student-athlete, she has been a member of the National Honor Society for two academic years and the National French Honor society for four. Tricarico also earned the President’s Award for Academic Excellence.
