Matt Kavanagh, an incoming freshman attackman for the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse squad, and Team USA defeated Canada, 10-8, to capture the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 World Championships title Saturday at Turku, Finland.

Kavanagh was named tournament MVP and the most outstanding attackman of the event.

Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) tallied two goals and two assists in the championship game. He finished the tournament with 20 goals and 11 assists in seven contests as the U.S. notched a 5-2 record.

The U.S. went 2-2 in Blue Division play before downing Germany, 22-2, in the quarterfinals and the Iroquois Nationals, 12-7, in the semifinals. Kavanagh registered four goals and three assists versus Germany and then had two goals and two assists against the Iroquois Nationals.

Team USA’s playoff victories over the Iroquois Nationals and Canada avenged losses to those squads in division-round play. The U.S. has won all seven U-19 World Championships. The other titles came in 1988, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2008.

“The two games we lost, we knew we could have won,” Kavanagh said. “It was a matter of fine-tuning our offense and defense and doing the little things on the field that we did.”
