The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats are once again the kings of New York State’s Class “C.”
Behind five goals and two assists from Maryland-bound junior Tim Rotanz the Wildcats (18-3) defeated the Pen Yan Mustangs (20-3) 10-6 at Middletown high school to win the state championship.
The Wildcats defense stymied the Mustangs in the first half. Penn Yan was not able to crack the Wildcats defense until 1:30 left in the first half when Rion Davison was able to beat Tyler Lutjen in close. Davison scored again just over a minute later and Shoreham-Wading River went into the half up 5-2.
Penn Yen picked up the next goal on an extra man opportunity midway through the third quarter to close to within 5-3 but the Wildcats pushed the lead back to a four goal margin quickly on a goal by James Higgins and a second by Rotanz.
SWR last won the crown in 2007.
