CORTLAND – Juggernaut Garden City primed itself to continue its dynasty this afternoon, scoring the first six goals of the game and racing from there to a 15-5 win over Vestal in a Class B state girls’ lacrosse semifinal at SUNY-Cortland.

The Trojans (16-5) got four goals and three assists from Alexandra Bruno and three scores apiece from Catherine McTiernan and Catherine Dickinson in the easy triumph over its opponent from Section IV. Garden City will go for its seventh straight state title 2:30 p.m. Saturday when it meets Section V’s Canandaigua (18-3).

“You definitely have to use that to your advantage. We want to defend. Other teams want to take it away,’’ said Trojans coach Diane Chapman. “We are definitely playing well as a team right now.’’

Steamrolled Vestal will testify to that. Garden City’s Jenna Fuchs cracked the scoreboard just 48 seconds into the contest, and McTiernan made it 2-0 with 23:41 left in first half. Twenty-seven seconds later, a score by Lily Schmitt sent the Trojans ahead 3-0.

“Let’s set the tone, see what we have to do,’’ Chapman said of her team’s fast start.

Bruno spoke up for the next two goals, making it 4-0 with 19:10 left in the first and putting home another with 17:48 remaining.

“This is a state semifinal. You think every game is going to be a tight game,’’ Bruno said. “We just came out strong and played a good game today. That’s why we came out on top.’’

The Trojans’ five losses this season is the highest total during their state title run, although they came against top competition. Chapman hopes those defeats were a reminder to her team of what it takes to win.

“Every win and every loss we take as a learning process,’’ she said. “Hopefully, that will help us to do what we need to do tomorrow.’’

Bruno said her teammates won’t approach that final hurdle at half-speed.

“We were ready for the competition here,’’ she said. “Advancing each game, it becomes more competitive. Winners know how to win.’’
