Hofstra senior attackman Mike DeNapoli scored three goals and freshmen Mike Malave and Tyler Begley each added two goals to lead the Hofstra Pride to an 11-10 victory over the National Team of Japan in the 23rd International Friendship Games at Edogawa Stadium, outside of Tokyo Sunday afternoon.
The Pride, who have only three days remaining on their tour that started last Wednesday, are now 2-0 on the trip with a victory (22-0) over an Under 20-Tokyo Select All-Star squad last Friday. Hofstra will play three college teams, Waseda University, Keio University and the University of Tokyo on Tuesday before enjoying one final day of sightseeing on Wednesday. The Pride will leave Tokyo on Thursday for the return trip to New York on Thursday.

Sunday’s opening ceremonies and contests to the Friendship Games brought out a crowd of 4,000 enthusiastic fans to Edogawa City. The Pride led 4-1 after the first quarter, 6-4 at halftime and 9-7 after three quarters. Mike DeNapoli (Lynbrook, NY), who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player against the Japan National Team, opened the scoring and tallied Hofstra’s final two goals. Graduate-student Steve Serling (Garden City, NY), junior Ryan O’Leary (East Meadow, NY) and redshirt senior Brad Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, NJ) also posted first quarter goals.
Freshman Mike Malave (Wading River, NY) notched two goals in the second quarter before classmate Tyler Begley (East Islip, NY) sandwiched a goal by sophomore Lance Yapor (Glenview, IL) in the third quarter for Hofstra.
