Garden City (14-5) advances to Sunday’s Long Island championship game to face the winner of Thursday’s Hauppauge- Eastport South Manor title game in Suffolk.

“Winning a County Championship is awesome,” said senior Dickinson. “I’ve won four, but this is definitely the best one. We work hard and we were victorious in the end. We are very confident, we are on a roll now and we are going to keep going.”

This was a hard fought battle until the end. In the first half there were two ties and three lead changes. Garden City went up by three goals with a goal by Dickinson with 25.5 left in the first half and held a 7-5 halftime advantage.

In the second half the Trojans went up by three at the 21:15 mark with another Dickinson score. Wantagh (13-6) fought back tying the game at 10 with a goal by Allie McClain with 13:19 left in the game.

Kaleigh Craig tied the game again at 11 with 11:32 remaining for Wantagh, but Bruno started the Trojans on a 3-1 run by scoring with 10:14 left in the game. Catherine McTiernan scored her only goal of the game and the last Garden City goal with 7:31 left to make it 14-11.

“We knew Wantagh was going to be a tough opponent going in,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “When we did get the ball we were able to control it a little bit and score some great goals.

“We were able to go up by a couple but you are never able to get a comfortable enough lead against a team like that. The girls never gave up, they played hard and they did what we asked them to do.

“It’s going to be a tough opponent whichever one we face out in Suffolk County. We just got to make sure we go in and try to do a little bit better on the draw control.”

Wantagh won 20 of the 28 draws in this game. Kaleigh Craig scored six goals and Colleen Lovett added three.

“Our season was really good,” said Wantagh head coach Bobbi Colavita. “We got to the county finals and the girls did everything we asked them to.”
