Jon Reese had three goals and one assist and Tom Moore tallied three goals today as host West Islip defeated Sachem North, 10-5, in a Suffolk County Class A semifinal.
Top-seeded West Islip (18-1) moves on to play Ward Melville in the Suffolk County Class A final on Wednesday at Stony Brook University. Ward Melville eliminated Smithtown West, 13-9.
“This was a great game,” said senior midfielder Reese. “We played them earlier in the season (winning 14-3) and we knew they would come out and play a lot harder today because this game had a lot more significance.
“This wasn’t a team we could take lightly; we knew we had to come out here and play hard. Skill isn’t going to win you anything because everyone is skilled when you get down to the last four teams. It’s about who wants it more.
“We can’t wait for the next game.”
West Islip led, 2-0, after one period and then broke it open in the second period, seizing a 7-1 lead. Jack Kelly grabbed 10 saves, Anthony DeLuca and Brendan Smith both had two goals and two assist.
“We played a real good first half,” said West Islip head coach Scott Craig. “We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well and a couple of our big guns were having a hard time putting the ball in.
When we did move the ball we got wide open shots and we were able to have success. We played great defense and our goalie did an outstanding job.”
West Islip defeated Ward Melville, 8-5, in the regular season.
“We play Ward Melville every year and every year they are great games,” said Craig. “Ward Melville has gotten better and they are playing much better defense now than they were earlier in the season so it’s going to be a very challenging situation.”
John Quinn made 14 saves for Sachem North while Shawn Murphy and Joseph Caridi each had two goals and Kyle Rhatigan had four assists.
“This senior group did a great job,” said Sachem North head coach Jason Mauro. “I couldn’t have been more proud of these guys; they had a great season.
“We lost to a great team and a great program and that’s where we want to be and we are going to get there.”
