The Ward Melville boys’ lacrosse team walked onto the field at Smithtown West for the semifinals today in the Suffolk County Class A playoffs still stinging from last year’s 15-7 defeat in the same game.
The Patriots, behind a stellar relief effort from goaltender Dan Nemirov, shut down the lethal Bulls’ offense for the final three quarters and picked up an upset victory, 13-9, to advance to the Suffolk County finals Wednesday against West Islip at Stony Brook.
Between Nemirov’s 11 saves, a zone defense in the second half and a neutralizing effort at the face off X, Ward Melville controlled play over the final 36 minutes after being behind 6-4 at the end of the first quarter.
“They’re a great team and we felt that coming into this game we were a little bit of an underdog,” Ward Melville head coach Mike Hoppey said. “Our kids have played well in spurts the whole year, but that was the first game we really put together for four quarters.”
Mike Rastivo, Jack Bruckner and Frank Lucatuorto each recorded hat tricks, and it was two goals by Rastivo in the third quarter that helped Ward Melville jump in front for good.
The end of the game was marred by a bench emptying skirmish that caused the contest to be called with five seconds left.
