The Bulls dynamic duo of James Pannell (four goals, two assists) and Matt Schultz (six goals, one assist) combined for 10 goals and three assists and the Bulls also got big contributions from underclassmen Ryan Keenan (one gola, three assists), Christian Zawadski (two goals, one assist) and Brian Masi (two goals) en route to the convincing win. Smithtown was also boosted by a dominant performance at the face off X by Johns Hopkins bound Craig Madarasz.

“We knew we’d have a hands full coming in,” Hills East (10-8) head coach Gordie Hodgson said. “The Thunderbirds came in fresh off a road upset of Sachem East but the Bulls proved to be a different animal.

“They’re a very good team and they’ll vie for a county championship,” Hodgson said. “We’ll regroup – we have a lot of boys back so I’m optimistic about our future in general.”

The future for the Bulls is Friday afternoon as they welcome in rival Ward Melville (a 12-5 winner over Smithtown East) in a semifinal match up. Smithtown West dominated the Patriots, 12-6, on the road earlier this season and beat Ward Melville in the same semifinal game last season.

“Last year is last year – we’re worrying about right now,” Bulls head coach Bob Moltisanti said. “Melville is a heck of a team and they have a ton of tradition over there. They’re going to be coming over here and giving us their best; we have a lot of tradition here at Smithtown as well.

“It should be a good game, I’m looking forward to it.”

The winner of that game will get a shot at either West Islip or Sachem North, which both advanced today. The semifinal match ups are exactly the same as in 2011 when West Islip defeated Smithtown West in overtime for the county championship before falling to Farmingdale in the extra session in the Long Island championship.
