Ian Kirby dominated with seven goals for top-seeded Massapequa today in a 14-5 win over Port Washington in a Nassau County Class A semifinal game at Hofstra.
Massapequa (15-2) moves on to play the winner of the Baldwin vs. Syosset game in the finals at 6pm on Tuesday, May 29th.
“This was a really hard fought effort,” said sophomore attack Kirby, “We needed to know we had to shut down (Jake) Frocarro and if we shut him down we knew we had this in the bag.
“We just have to keep playing this way. I feel great right now, but we are still not there yet so we have to keep working hard in practice.”
Massapequa took a 6-3 lead going into halftime and started slowly in the second half. But in the fourth quarter the Chiefs scored seven goals to blow the game open Joe Danaher grabbed 13 saves and Paul Bentz had three goals and one assist.
“We started out slow,” said Massapequa head coach Tim Radomski. “We picked it up in the second half. We knew we could run with these guys. We knew they had a couple of guys and if we got behind we knew our offense would shoot us out of the hole.
“We take every game one game at a time. We’ve been to the county finals the last two years so the kids will work hard. We will have them ready and we will see what happens.”
Frocarro had two goals and one assist and eighth grader Nicky Ferraro grabbed 10 saves for Port Washington (9-8).
“I’m proud of the boys and I’m proud of where we got to,” said Port Washington head coach Tom Rooney. “It would’ve been nice to knock them off.
“I felt like we had a good plan but they are a very good team. They outplayed us and they deserved it.”
