Allison Gionta and Dene’ DiMartino each had four goals and two assists today to lead host Eastport-South Manor to a 15-6 victory over East in a Suffolk County girls’ Class B quarterfinal.
The second-seeded Sharks (13-3) will host No. 3 Sayville in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday. East Hampton finishes at 10-7.
Both teams went through the feeling out process in the first five minutes of the game, but soon after the Sharks began to swarm.
Gionta struck quickly for three goals in a 2:30 span that began with 19:10 remaining in the first half and Katie Meinecke added three consecutive goals before a single tally by DiMartino gave the Sharks a 7-0 lead with 12:55 left in the half.
“It was huge,“ head coach Becky Thorn said about the early lead. “You can’t get to comfortable but going into the second half with a lead is comforting, especially as a coach.”
The Sharks went into the half up 10-3 and the Bonackers never got any closer in the second half.
“It was just all ball movement,” Thorn said about her offenses efficiency. That’s what we’ve been working on since the fall – it’s just basic lacrosse right now.”
The Sharks ware anxious to play Sayville. The Golden Flashes have defeated the Sharks twice in a row in the last year.
“We have game film on them and we know they have four big threats so there will be some key match ups,“ Thorn said about Sayville. “This is a team we lost to last year, we lost to them this year in the last eight minutes of the game and I think my girls will be looking for blood.”
