Playing and defeating any team twice in a row is a difficult task for any program, let alone when the match up is between two playoff teams.
But that’s what the second-seeded Sayville Golden Flashes were able to do Friday afternoon in the Suffolk County Class B boys’ lacrosse quarterfinals, defeating the Rocky Point Eagles, 12-4.
Just a week after knocking off Rocky Point, 10-6, Sayville came out fired up from the start and never let the Eagles get into the game.
Sayville (13-3) will move on to host third-seeded Eastport-South Manor in a semifinal match up on May 24. Rocky Point closed at 10-7.
Jake Sichenzia led the attack with four goal and two assists and Dan Koehler had four goals and an assist for Sayville. Conner O’Neil contributed two goals.
“The kids played poised,” Sayville head coach Christian Doller said. “They were very confident. We knew if we got our shots like we did last time we could get them to drop. We (shot from) right on the doorstep and we were able to finish.”
Sayville had no trouble finishing all game and by the time the third quarter ended the Golden Flashes held a commanding 10-1 lead. Rocky Point and all-American defender Ryan Palasek implemented a zone defense to try and slow Sayville down, but the Golden Flashes were well prepared.
“We played a zone like this the last 12 games, no one is really playing us man,” Doller said. “They’re trying to pack it in on us and we run against it in practice so we’re doing pretty well with it.”
Rocky Point, which ends its season with 10 wins after a disappointing 3-13 mark in 2011 is looking towards a bright future according to head coach Mike Bowler.
“We made a couple of mistakes with the zone and they kind of picked it apart,” Bowler said. “We just didn’t get that many opportunities to score – they controlled the ball.”
