From Press Release
The C.W. Post women’s lacrosse team was led by a game-high seven points by sophomore attacker Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.), the second-highest points performance in an NCAA game, and the Pioneers posted a 15-10 victory over the LeMoyne Dolphins to advance to Saturday’s NCAA Championship game against West Chester at Louisville, Ky.
Senior attacker Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals, while senior midfielder Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.), junior attacker Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) and junior attacker Abbie Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) each registered hat tricks in the victory.
Mayott got the Pioneers on the board early, with an unassisted score at 27:13. But LeMoyne scored four straight – two by Brittany Brigandi – to take a 4-1 lead.
The Pioneers went 20 minutes without a goal, but with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half, the offense kicked into high gear. Spagnoletta scored back-to-back unassisted goals at 7:52 and 6:36 to pull the game to 4-3. Then Sileo and Ross took over, connecting on three straight at 6:09, 5:32, and 0:51 to hand the Pioneers a two goal advantage heading into halftime.
The second half began with the momentum firmly on the side of the Pioneers, as Spagnoletta opened the scoring at 28:45, followed by a free position goal by Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.) at 26:37, and capped by Mayott’s second of day, a laser shot at 22:59 that gave the Pioneers a 9-4 lead.
LeMoyne scored two straight to cut into the lead, and the Pioneers again went on a scoring drought, going twelve minutes without a goal. But at 10:49, Olen kickstarted the offense by herself with three straight goals – two coming on Sileo helpers. Her third goal at 6:43 gave C.W. Post a commanding 12-6 lead, but the pioneers continued the run with two more goals, Mayott’s third of the day at 6:14 and Losco’s second of the afternoon at 5:50.
LeMoyne continued to battle, scoring four of the last five goals of the game, but the Pioneer lead was insurmountable as C.W. Post won the final draw control of the game with just over 30 seconds to play and ran out the clock for the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) was strong in goal, as she posted 10 saves on the afternoon. Her counterpart Kelly Fucillo also made 10 stops in goal for the Dolphins. Offensively, Kathleen Conese and Brigandi each registered hat tricks for LeMoyne.
C.W. Post improves to 16-3 on the season, while LeMoyne wraps up with a final record of 16-3. The Pioneers advance to their first NCAA Championship since 2008, where they lost a 13-12 contest to West Chester. In 2007, the Pioneers defeated West Chester in the championship game by a final score of 15-7 for their second National Championship. In 2001, the Pioneers won their first National Championship against West Chester, 13-9.
