Senior midfielder Kaleigh Craig had five goals and two assists and colleen Lovett contributed four goals and four assists to lead Wantagh to an 18-3 win over Bethpage with five goals and two assists in the first round of Nassau County’s Class B playoffs.
The third-seeded Warriors (11-5) advance to the quarterfinals Thursday and will host sixth-seeded South Side. Bethpage finished at 9-7.
“We played really well after the first ten minutes,” said Craig. “We finally started to play together and we got our momentum finally. We are really excited for this playoff season; we have a lot of talent this year. We have three weeks left to really make a statement.”
Wantagh made a statement in the first half, seizing an 11-1 lead. The Warriors grabbed 12 of the 13 draws in the first half.
“Once we got our mindset we got everything going so it was nice,” said Wantagh head coach Bobbi Colavita. “These girls have been playing really well and they are a nice confident team. I just think they are a really skilled team and they can do whatever they want as long as they put their minds to it.
“I’m really happy with the whole season overall. We got a three-way tie for conference champs so that was nice because we haven’t had one.”
Brianna Whelan grabbed 10 saves and Lindsay Cafiero had two goals for Bethpage.
“We did much better than we anticipated in the beginning of the season,” said Bethpage assistant coach Nicole Egivino. “We had a few losses that really hurt us.
“We started out today really aggressive – much better than we anticipated and unfortunately we kind of lost it somewhere in the first half. We have to be happy with what we did this season and leave this loss out there on the field.”
