The Syosset boys’ lacrosse team entered 2012 as the No. 1 seed in Nassau County Class A. The Braves promptly lost their first two games of the season and three of their first four.

That Syosset team is long gone. Just ask the MacArthur Generals.

The Braves started strong and carried on throughout, routing MacArthur, 17-4, in the County quarterfinals on Tuesday night. The Braves have now won seven in a row and nine of 10 since starting the season at 1-3.

Second-seeded Syosset (12-4) advances to play third-seeded Baldwin next Wednesday, May 23, at Hofstra in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Baldwin advanced by handing East Meadow a 9-4 defeat.

“This team is really a coach’s dream right now,“ Syosset head coach John Calabria said. “We’re playing our best lacrosse in May and they’ve gotten better all year and learned from their mistakes.”

Calabria admitted his team’s mistakes early on, saying the No. 1 seed is “kind of like a target on your back.” On Tuesday night the Braves took the Generals best shot and came back for more.

Andrew Keith opened the scoring for Syosset at 10:25 of the first quarter, but the Generals won the ensuing face off. After a lengthy possession MacArthur’s Gerard Cunningham was able to score on a rocket from the outside to tie the game at one.

MacArthur was right in the game and planned on sticking around. The Syosset of the early season may have let that happen, but not these Braves.

Syosset scored 10 goals in the first half to go into the half up 10-2, and added six more in the third quarter for good measure.

McArthur (7-9) got a goal and two assists from Gerard Cunningham.

The rest of Nassau County should be on the lookout.

“In those early season loses we learned and got better from them,” Calabria said. “It’s a coach’s dream.”

And a nightmare for the rest of the county.
