Mike Ainbinder scored three goals and Pat Hannon added a pair as Baldwin defeated East Meadow, 9-4, Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Nassau County Class A playoffs at Hofstra University.
Third-seeded Baldwin (11-5) advances to the semifinals to meet second-seeded Syosset May 23 at Hofstra at 5:30 p.m. East Meadow finished at 8-8.
The Bruins led 6-3 as time was ticking down in the first half, just minutes after East Meadow had cut into the lead. Ainbinder wscored after a scramble around the goal mouth and gave Baldwin a crucial goal.
“The game is a momentum game,” Baldwin head coach Rich Garguilo said. “If you score the last goal of a quarter or the half and it gives you momentum going into the next phase of the game. At halftime we scored a goal and our guys were fired up and we came out sluggish in the third quarter but we got (the late) goal and it gave us back the momentum and took a little steam out of them.”
Garguilo was speaking about a second backbreaking goal scored by Ainbinder, this one with 34 seconds left in the third quarter that put Baldwin up 7-3, again minutes after the Jets had cut the lead to three.
“Absolutely,” East Meadow head coach Barney Dellaquila said when asked if those goals hurt a little more coming so late in the second and third quarter. “They were unsettled situations and they got us – they got the better of us. At the end of a game against a good quality team that’s going to hurt.”
The Bruins – who defeated East Meadown, 13-7, on May 2 – now face a major challenge in the surging Syosset Braves. But on this night Garguilo and his staff were enjoying this moment.
“I love these guys – I absolutely love these guys, out of all the teams I’ve had,” he said. “The heart and soul of these 17 seniors – they just never stop. They believe in each other and they want to practice again, they want to be around each other and keep it going, so I’m excited for that.”
