Samantha’s Stavish’s goal from Brooke Witkowski with :23 seconds left was the difference in a 10-9 game over the C.W. Post Pioneers handing the Golden Lions the ECC Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Dowling wraps up their season with a 13-4 overall record and a perfect 8-0 ECC mark. The Pioneers finish their regular season 14-3, 7-1 ECC.

Witkowski put the Golden Lions up with and unassisted goal in the third minute of play. The Pioneers came back with four unanswered for the 4-1 lead with 21:09 remaining in the half. Kelly DiFede tallied her first of five goals to cut their deficit in half.

The teams exchanged points for the next nine minutes for a 6-3 score with just under seven minutes remaining. DiFede netted back to back goals to get the home team within one at 6-5. CWP managed one more tally before DiFede closed out the half with a goal from Witkowski.

After a long possession by the Dowling offense, Stavish found the back of the net from a pass from Jackie Andersen to knot the game at seven. DiFede used a free position shot to give the Golden Lions their first lead since the opening minutes of the first half.

CWP’s Katie Rotan answered with a free position goal of her own (8-8). Halfway through the half, Meagan Smith caused CWP’s Jackie Sileo to turnover the ball for Shannon Asquino to scoop it up and run it straight to the cage for a sliding shot just inside the left post. The Pioneers countered on the very next draw conrol with a goal from Lauren Spagnoletta.

Over the next 13 minutes each side remained scoreless. Following a DC timeout with 2:34 left on the clock, the Golden Lions attack patiently awaited an opportunity that came with :23 seconds left when Witkowski found Stavish who put in the game winner.

DiFede led all scorers with five goals while winning four draw controls. Stavish added three goals and Witkowski dished three assists.

In the net for the Golden Lions, Tina Fey posted nine saves.

The Golden Lions finish their season with their second straight ECC Championship.
