For the fourth time this year in league play the West Islip Lions have found themselves staring at a deficit in the fourth quarter.
And after coming from behind and defeating Northport 8-6 on Friday afternoon, the Lions have prevailed each time, moving to 12-0 against league foes.
Nick Aponte (two goals, one assist) ripped a shot across his body to the top corner that tied the game with 9:32 remaining. Senior Tom Moore (two goals) scored 31 seconds later to give the Lions (13-1) the lead and Aponte added insurance on a great individual effort exactly four minutes later.
“I think we just relaxed and showed a little more poise,” West Islip coach Scott Craig said. “We’ve been in this situation before and I think we have more experience when it’s on the line like that than other teams do.
“I think it’s getting to the point in the season when you need a quality win to set yourselves up seeding wise.”
Brian Cannon (two goals, one assist) scored halfway through the first quarter to give the Tigers (8-5) their first goal, but the Lions roared back, scoring two goals in just 57 seconds after Cannon evened the score.
Northport – led by John Glancy (three goals) – struck for the next three goals and went into halftime leading 6-5.
“I thought they did a great job in the first half of just controlling the ball,“ Craig said. “We didn’t have a lot of touches in the first half but we did a better job in the second half and did a better job controlling the ball rather than just attacking the goalie the first ten seconds we had the ball.”
Neither team scored in the third quarter and the Tigers went into the final 12 minutes holding onto a one goal lead. But there was no worry in West Islip.
“Hopefully we don’t put ourselves in that situation but if we do we’re going to tap into that experience,” Craig said. “We’re going to be a hard out for people because of that belief that we can get it done in the 11th hour.”
