Devin Dwyer had three goals and three assists while three others – Patric Berkery, Ryan Norton and Liam Kennedy – tallied two goals apiece as visiting Garden City rolled to a 13-4 victory Saturday over Shoreham-Wading River in boys’ lacrosse action.
The Trojans, ranked No. 1 by LILacrosseNews.com and in every national poll, improved to 11-0. The Wildcats fell to 9-2.
Garden City took a 3-0 lead, but only held a 4-2 lead with the clock winding down in the first half. Then, Dwyer found Ryan Norton in front for his second goal of the game with just three seconds remaining in the half. It ended up swinging momentum big time in the favor of the Trojans.
“We started to finish our opportunities,” Garden City head coach Steve Finnell said. “The Norton goal was really big because it made it 5-2 which really gave us momentum. Then we got rolling in the third quarter and we were able to put some goals together.”
The Trojans outscored the Wildcats 6-1 in the third quarter to enter the final frame up 11-3. From that point forward it was all about keeping the Wildcats in check.
Tim Rotanz led SWR with a goal and two assists.
“Our defense did a good job containing Rotanz and (Trevor) Brosco,” Finnell said. “They’re one of the best tandem of midfielders in the country.”
Another key factor for the Trojans was in the face off circle. James Sullivan stepped up in the second half and controlled 11/19 draws overall in the game.
“I think we played one of our better games this year. It’s hard to play for 48 minutes and play well but we’re getting closer to that. “
