It was billed as a showdown of the top two girls’ lacrosse teams on Long Island.

Victoria Holland

But with Victoria Holland making 13 saves and Annie Heagerty leading the attack, visiting St. Anthony’s toppled Garden City, 14-9, today.

The Friars (9-1) entered play ranked No. 2 by LILacrosseNews.com. Garden City (7-3) was No. 1.

Heagerty finished with four goals and two assists and helped the Friars seize a 9-2 lead. Maggie Bill added three goals and an assist and while Darcy Messina, Chrissy Schireiber and Alexis Nicolia each scored a pair.

“Our defense and offense came out hard,” said senior Holland, “We played great. Our fast break offense was really great today and our defense really crashed hard and did what they had to do.”

St. Anthony’s, coming off an impressive 19-5 victory over Sacred Heart, used a suffocating defense to keep the Trojans off track.

“I am really proud of my girls,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Corrine Lomangino. “In a lot of ways this was their response to our loss in Maryland to Bryn Mawr, (last) week. They really showed what we are made of as a team and I’m proud of their character.

“Our defense played awesome,” continued Lomangino, “We shut down a lot of their players by playing as a unit. Annie Lynch and Victoria Holland had some standout plays for us. They both really stepped up for us with some big moments and that gave us the momentum.”

Alexander Bruno led the Trojans with five goals and one assist. The Trojans made a brief comeback attempt in the second half, but never got quite close enough to challenge.

“My girls never stopped and never gave up,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman, “It’s hard when you’re losing to a great team by seven goals to come back; you can’t dig a hole and give a 10-goal lead to a team of that caliber.

“We had opportunities in the first half and just didn’t put it in and you have to do that against a team like this.”
