Shoreham-Wading River hosted Comsewogue, the only undefeated team in Suffolk County, late Tuesday afternoon. By the time evening fell the Warriors were traveling home with a loss on their record.

The Wildcats (8-1) jumped out to a 4-0 first quarter lead, led 8-2 at the half and held on for a 12-7 victory. Evan Purdy opened the scoring for the Wildcats and Trevor Brosco (three goals) followed moments later, momentarily stunning Comsewogue.

Hunter Hayes scored on an extra man opportunity to put the Wildcats up 3-0. Hayes was blasted by a defender after he put the ball in the cage, sending Shoreham-Wading River right back to the man advantage. Hayes was able to feed James Higgins – who had assisted on Hayes’ goal – and the Wildcats took a commanding 4-0 lead.

“Our biggest concern was that they’ve jumped on teams early,” Shoreham-Wading River head coach Tom Rotanz said. “We knew that in order for us to be in this game we had to stop them early.

“Once we felt we had them early – they run a zone and they had to come out and pressure – and once they had to pressure then we had an opportunity to get those skip passes on the backside.”

Matt Cossidente scored the second of the Warriors early second half goals to draw his team back to within 8-4 but the Wildcat defense and goaltender Tyler Lutjen (17 saves) buckled down. Ryan Bray added three goals for the Wildcats.

“Tyler has been a mainstay in our program since the second or third grade,” Rotanz said. “He’s been tremendous for us and today was a nice day to step up. I think when the defense plays well and he makes a great save it just kicks up the excitement and communication.”

Justin Carlson had three goals and two assists for Comsewogue (10-1).

Shoreham-Wading River was able to reassert itself in Suffolk League II on Tuesday and will get a chance to prove itself amongst the elite in the nation when they host Garden City on Saturday afternoon. But of course Rotanz would hear none of it, instead focusing on Friday night’s opponent Mt. Sinai.

Today left no doubt that Suffolk County Class C needs to be on alert.
