The Sayville Golden Flashes have been locked in tight battles in three of its last four games.
On paper Tuesday night’s road match up against Eastport-South Manor shouldn’t have been as close, but the Sharks fought and clawed to stay in the game. A suffocating defensive effort in the second half helped Sayville (8-2) hold on for an 8-6 league win.
“It’s always important (to get league wins on the road),“ Sayville head coach Christian Doller said. “We’re still trying to put together a solid game. We’re getting through games and we’re a talented team but we have to put together a full 48 minutes.”
The Golden Flashes went up 6-2 early in the third quarter after a 49 second barrage that saw Zack Sirico, Jake Sichenzia (three goals) and Conner O’Neil (two goals, one assist)) all score. Sayville led 8-4 on a goal by O’Neil with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter.
Sayville would not score again, but its defense was up to the challenge, holding Eastport (6-5) to just one goal in an 18:08 stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters. Goalkeeper Pat Fleming (eight saves) repeatedly came up huge.
“He had one weak game and after that he’s just been putting in so much extra time and it shows,” Doller said of Fleming. “He’s been making stop after stop – he’s our whole defense right now.”
It was enough on this night to pick up a tough road victory and move closer towards procuring a top seed in the Class B playoffs. But it wasn’t enough to satisfy Doller.
“To me this game shouldn’t have been that close,” he said. “We made a lot of mistakes and they pressured us a little bit. Our overtimes games and one goal games have been with really good teams. We have to put together a game and pull away from teams so they don’t have any hope left.”
Tyler Aki led ESM with two goals and an assist and Ryan Brisson had two goals.
