Tom Moore collected six goals and had one assist to help host West Islip rallied for a 14-11 win over Bay Shore today in Division I boys’ lacrosse.
Anthony DeLuca added two goals and two assists as the Lions improved to 9-1.
Bay Shore (7-3) had taken a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter after three unanswered goals. But West Islip surged ahead with a 5-1 run in the fourth period.
“Bay Shore came to play today,” said West Islip head coach Scott Craig. “They did a great job; we came out flat and had no emotion.
“Our kids showed a lot of character coming back after we gave up three goals in a row. They took the 10-9 lead on us; to come back and take control at that point showed a lot of character.”
In the second quarter West Islip won all 10 of the face-offs and seized a 9-7 halftime lead.
“Bay Shore came out and surprised us,” said senior attackman Moore. “We weren’t ready to play like that. They came out and brought it to us and we had to fight to stay in this one.”
Bay Shore goalie Aaron Lewis was a standout with 13 saves. T.J. Delyra (two assists), Jake Sheets (one assist) and Griffin Rock had three goals each.
“We played great,” said Bay Shore head coach Tim Cox. “We competed to the very end with one of the top teams in the state. We were right there, but we made a couple of mental errors at the end of the game. We gave them a couple of goals we normally don’t give up, but that’s the way the game is.”
