BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. – McDonogh School went on a 9-0 run to break open a tight game as the No. 1 Eagles dominated No. 2 Garden City, 20-9, Saturday in the nightcap of the inaugural Maryland-New York Challenge at St. Paul’s School for Girls.

The game pitted the two top-rated teams in the country last year, according to LaxPower’s rankings. The teams also entered play as the same No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country this year.
McDonogh (10-0) led only 6-5 after the six-time Class B state champion Trojans used a 5-2 spurt to get back in the game.

But after a time out by McDonogh coach Chris Robinson, Meghan Whittle (seven goals) scored off a feed from Grace Muller and Taylor Cummings (five goals) scored minutes later. Whittle, Mallory Schonk and Cummings added goals before the half to make it 11-6.

The second half was all McDonogh as Sam Burgess, Corinne Etchison (three goals), Whittle and Anne Smith scored to make it 15-5.

Catherine Dickinson had three goals and two assists and Alexandra Bruno had three goals for Garden City.
