These two teams entered play as the only undefeated teams in Division 1 in Suffolk County. Ward Melville (10-0) came out aggressive, gaining a 7-1 halftime lead and held on as Bay Shore (8-1) rallied in the second half.

“We knew they were a great team,” said junior midfielder Rogers-Healion, “We were both undefeated so we knew it was going to be a hard game.

“We are ecstatic right now. We can’t believe we are undefeated; we are just trying to keep our heads in the game and not get too ahead of ourselves.”

In the first half Ward Melville dominated the draws, winning all nine. The Patriots refused to allow Bay Shore to get any offense going as Yuna Hur and Kim Geiger both had two goals to spark the early run.

“This was a huge win for us,” said Ward Melville head coach Kerri Kilkenny. “We came out strong, we came out confident. The girls really turned it on and they got the job done today.

“I’m feeling really good right now. It’s nice to be undefeated at this point. We are past the half way mark and it is really nice to have that comfort, but we need to continue to work hard because any team out there can certainly surprise anyone at any time.”

In the second half Bay Shore came out more aggressive. At the 17:35 mark of the second half the Marauders had a two-man advantage because of two Ward Melville cards.

Bay Shore drew within 7-5 behind senior midfielder Caroline deLyra (three goals, two assists).. But Ward Melville never allowed the Maraiders to get any closer.

“We did not play our game today,” said Bay Shore head coach Allison Pfeffer, “The first half we couldn’t get a possession off the draw and that killed us, I still feel excellent about this season I have a very strong team and they will come right along.”
