Defending Suffolk County Class B champion Hauppauge scored an impressive win over one of its main competitors Friday evening in a matchup between undefeated League II foes.
The host Lady Eagles took a 9-3 halftime lead and held on for a 14-7 victory over Sayville.
Standout attack Taylor Ranftle continued her stellar season, scoring three goals and assisting on five others to lead the Hauppauge (6-0) offense.
“She has the ability to move the ball and see plays before they actually happen, she sets things up,” Hauppauge head coach Abby Zeltmann said about Ranftle. “If one thing’s not working she can alter the offense. She really does a good job making sure the ball is taken care of. She’s a game changer.”
Ranftle had a hand in each of the first four Hauppauge goals – assisting on the first two, scoring the third, and assisting on the fourth.
The Lady Eagles held a 14-4 lead late in the second half before the Golden Flashes (5-2) scored three straight goals to end the game.
Madison Hoon led Sayville with three goals.
Sayville head coach Adam Sznitken tried to keep his team from getting too fired up going into a game against the defending county champs.
“I don’t think there’s anything extra,” Sznitken said of the matchup. “We knew they were the No. 1 seed and returning champs. They deserved the No. 1 seed and we were hoping to come in and have a good showing.
“I don’t know if we played our best game. I definitely give credit to them; they took us out of our game. They’re the champs for a reason.”
