Senior Mike DeNapoli scored a career-high four goals and sophomore Lance Yapor added three goals and one assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 9-5 non-conference victory over the Big Green of Dartmouth at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday night. The Pride, who snapped a two-game losing skid, improve to 5-5 on the season while Dartmouth dropped its sixth consecutive game to fall to 2-6.
DeNapoli topped his previous best of three goals, set most recently against Towson last Saturday, and equaled his single game-best in points with four set in 2010 against Princeton. Yapor, who ended a three- game goal drought, recorded his third hat-trick of the season. Junior Ian Braddish and freshman Mike Malave tallied the other Hofstra goals and freshman Tyler Begley equaled the team season-best with three assists. Senior goalie Andrew Gvozden made six saves while facing 33 Dartmouth shots.
The Big Green was led by junior Chris Costabile with two goals while senior Drew Tunney picked up three assists. Senior goalie Fergus Campbell made 12 saves in the Dartmouth cage.
The Pride scored the game’s first four goals to take a 4-0 lead just 44 seconds into the second quarter with DeNapoli scoring three of the four. He opened the scoring 6:54 into the contest off a pass from graduate-student Steve Serling. Less than three minutes later, Yapor scored his 15th of the season from five yards out for a 2-0 lead. DeNapoli made it 3-0 with 3:11 to play in the first, off a pass from Yapor. It was his 10th goal of the year and closed out the scoring in the first quarter.
DeNapoli completed the hat-trick just 44 seconds into the second period as Tyler Begley found the senior for a 4-0 advantage. Dartmouth got on the board with 10:39 to play in the half as senior Colin Delaney notched his eighth goal of the season, on the man-up, from Drew Tunney. But the Pride dented the twine twice more before halftime as Yapor scored on the man-up, off a pass from Begley, almost three minutes later, and freshman Mike Malave posted his second goal of the year with 3:17 to play in the half for a 6-1 lead.
The Big Green got one back before halftime and one after the break to close to 6-3 as sophomore Brendan Rotenz scored his 10th of the year with 2:05 to play in the half and junior Nikki Dysenchuk notched his eighth of the year 2:24 into the third to cut the deficit to 6-3.
But Yapor completed his hat-trick for the Pride almost four minutes later off a pass from Ian Braddish and Braddish then scored an unassisted goal with 1:50 to play in the third for an 8-3 lead. It was his sixth goal of the year.
Costabile and Tunney then teamed up twice to cut the Pride lead to 8-5, as Costabile scored his 13th of the year with 48 seconds remaining in the third, and then scored on the man-up with 9:23 to play in the fourth quarter. But DeNapoli scored his fourth of the game and 12th of the season, from Begley, with 5:28 to play for Hofstra and the Pride defense shutdown the Big Green the rest of the way for the victory.
The Pride outshot Dartmouth, 39-33 and picked up 28 ground balls to the Big Green’s 22. Hofstra also won 11 of 17 face-offs with junior John Antoniades winning nine of 14. He and defender Michael Hamilton each picked up four ground balls to lead Hofstra.
Hofstra returns to Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, April 7 when the Pride host the Hawks of St. Joseph’s University (PA) at Shuart Stadium. Game time for the Pride’s Senior Day and final home game of the season is 1 p.m.
