BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. – Patrick Kelly scored the game winner in overtime to give Calvert Hall a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Manhasset today in the opener of the Long Island-Maryland Challenge at St. Paul’s School.
The Cardinals (5-1, No. 2 in nation in MaxPreps.com and Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse) clawed their way back after being down at the half 4-1. Kelly engineered the comeback with back-to-back goals to get the Cardinals back within two goals. Then fellow attackman Ryan Brown followed with a pair, including the game tying goal with 8:12 left to make it 5-5.
“It just shows that we can stick together,” said Kelly. “We knew if we fought back hard and started sticking our shots we knew that we could end up with the win.”
Manhasset (No. 21 in MaxPreps.com rankings) coach Bill Cherry, despite the disappointing defeat, said the Challenge was a success.
“This is one of the greatest games I have ever been a part of,” he said. “Aside from championship games, you have the No. 2 team in the country and a program like ours this is what it’s about.
“I told the team right before overtime it doesn’t get any better then this.”
The Cardinals had a tough time containing the Indians shooters in the first half as Manhasset (1-1) opened the contest with two first quarter goals by attackman Quinn Moroney. The scores allowed Manhasset to put the Calvert Hall defense on their heels. The Indians found more net in the second quarter from Ryan Matthews and Dino Lavalle to give Manhasset a 4-1 lead heading into halftime.
Calvert Hall head coach Brian Kelly was impressed with the way his team played for the final minutes against the Indians.
“I told the guys at halftime this is a good place to be,” said Kelly on the comeback. “Our kids handled it and we stayed together. We made a couple adjustments defensively and that helped, and offensively we just chipped one goal at a time.”
The Indians start the third quarter strong as Moroney found Christian Zanetis for a 5-1 lead. From then on it was all Calvert Hall, which had to solve the standout goaltending of Evan Molloy (14 saves).
