St. Anthony’s overcame a brilliant performance by Holy Trinity goalie Sam Weiss and earned a 9-2 victory today in its season and Catholic League opener.
Brian Sherlock scored two of his four goals in the fourth quarter when the Friars finally clinched it as Weiss posted an amazing 29 saves.
“We walked into what was an extremely hot goaltender,” said St. Anthony’s coach Keith Wieczorek, whose team is ranked among the top five teams in the nation in every national poll, “They are a competitive team and are well coached, it was a tough game and everything you want in your first game.”
St. Anthony’s attack also featured Brendon Hurley’s two goals and a goal each by Matt Chanenchuk, Sean McDonagh and Kevin Long.
“We started out slow,” Sherlock said, “We picked it up towards the end. We just didn’t have the momentum today but hopefully it will get better as the season goes on.”
St. Anthony’s defense was solid in front of Eric Caliendo.
“Our defense played great today,” Wieczorek said, “Jonathan Lynott, Sal Vitale and George Deignan played real good on close defense and our goalie Eric Caliendo played great today also.”
At times, the Friars became frustrated by the standout play of Weiss., who kept Holy Trinity (1-2) close through the first three quarters. Jake Mazzola and Chris Laviano scored for the Titans.
“Sam Weiss was standing on his head!” said Holy Trnity coach Steve Tempone. “He had 29 saves on almost 40 shots today.
“Our defense is very stout and is great to build a team around throughout the season. Our offense just needs to gel around Chris Laviano and we will be a force to reckon with for the rest of the season.”
