Despite losing its head coach to a red card and being forced to play two men down due to yellow cards, Massapequa claimed an exciting 13-12 victory today over visiting West Babylon.
Massapequa received its fourth yellow card with 15:36 remaining in the game and that prompted coach Megan Zimmer to dispute the call that left her out with a red card and the Chiefs a man down. At the 10 minute mark Massapequa received another yellow card, forcing the Chiefs to play the rest of the game two men down.
West Babylon capitalized on the huge advantage, scoring two goals, by Christina Esposito (eight goals, one assist) and Samantha Apuzzoto tie it, 12-12 with 3:51 remaining. But 56 seconds later, Massapequa’s Kristin Yevoli (four goals, two assists) scored the game-winner and the Chiefs were able to control the ball the rest of the game.
“Honestly this is one of the most fun games I’ve had since I’ve been on this team,” said Massapequa’s Kelsey O’Brien, who had four goals and two assists. “This is the type of game you want to win.”
Massapequa improved to 3-1.
“It was definitely a very intense game,” Massapequa assistant coach Leigh-Ann Sauter said. “Both teams played very well and my team should how much heart and intensity they have by pulling out a win while playing with two men down with 10 minutes left.”
Madalyn Pimental also had a solid game for Massapequa with two goals and two assists.
“Today we played as a team, we meshed well and I loved it,” O’Brien said, “After this game I’m pretty sure we can go far and I’m really excited about it.”
West Babylon (0-2) came out on fire and took a quick 3-0 lead at the 19:29 mark of the first half before Massapequa had a chance to get settled. Esposito scored two out of those three goals and tied her career high with eight goals.
“It was a tough game,” said West Babylon coach Colleen Kilgus, “I knew coming into the game that Massapequa was going to be a tough one for us.”
Freshman Samantha Apuzzo added two goals for West Babylon.
“Once you give a team like Massapequa the lead it is hard to grab it back,” Kilgus said, “I knew going into the game we had to stay on top unfortunately we couldn’t hold on to our lead.”
